September 30, 2014 By Bonnie Power

Whether you believe you are a confident or introverted, the key to job interview success is preparedness.

cover letter examplesAnd yes, you still need to prepare, even if you think job interviews are a breeze.

Here are some key points:

The key focus is to talk more about your strong points and downplay the skills and experience that you are most weak in.

1: Think Relaxing Thoughts, you’ll be more attractive to the interviewer, and appear more approachable.

I know it might be hard, but the best think you can do is to go into the interview in a relaxed state.  You can do this by preparing the night before, and having 3 or 4 key reasons why you are the best person for the job.

2: Remember its a Two Way Street.

You’re assessing them as much as they are assessing you.   One of the best job interview tips is to remember that you are interviewing the employer as much as they are interviewing you.  You’re evaluating their culture, the opportunity for advancement, the scope of the role, the connections you’ll develop, the remuneration and how flexible they will be with the working conditions. Have your questions lined up and ready to fire.

The beauty of the internet is that you can dig for the dirt on a company, and find information that they just can’t hide.  Google is your friend, and LinkedIn is one of the best sites to check out the current staff, and see what type of industries and backgrounds the key executive team has, as well as the rest of the management team.

4: Be Proactive about Your Job Search

Once you have a great new professional resume and LinkedIn profile, you’re armed and ready with your own personal career marketing documents.  If you’ve invested in a good quality resume with our professional resume writing services, we suggest you send it off to 10 – 20 recruiters who specialise in your industry.  Let them know in the email that you are considering job opportunities (in confidence), and you would like to meet with them sometime in the near future to see what type of roles they generally attract.

5: Know Your Top 5 Key Points

Just like any other sales meeting, you will need to clearly convey the top 5 skills, expertise and knowledge areas that you believe are most relevant for this opportunity.  So we suggest you write te a list of the five key points you plan to express in your interview, and think about how they are likely to benefit from these traits and attributes that you can contribution.

6: Write a list of questions, things you need to know.

Sometimes it’s hard to know what to ask. But high quailty candidates always have at least 3 good questions at the end of each interview.  We suggest you  take some time to consider what’s important to you in your career and the company where you’ll be spending the majority of your time.

7:  Find out who the interviewers will be.

Idealling, you’ll be meeting with the manager who you will be directly reporting to, but if you’ll be meeting with some one from Human Resources, keep in mind that you’ll be asked more general questions. In this case, be prepared to talk about your career history and background as well as your personality, work style and unique qualities.   Save the more technical and job specific questions for when you meet your potential future boss.

8: Imagine a successful interview.

People at the top of their game play out how they want things to run in their head, before it happens in real life.  We suggest you imagine interview going really well, imagine the body language you will be using, the tone of your voice, the way you will answer questions, and ensure that you are highlighting your top 5 key points.  Imagine the interviewer being really pleased to meet you at the end of the interview.

Action Steps:

  • Follow these 8 steps and you’ll be fully prepared and ultra confident when you next walk into the interview.
  • Write down your 5 key points that you will promote in your next interview, and go over the commonly asked interview questions, and
  • Rehearse in your mind how you will answer them, so you are promoting your key points.
